She’s been performing in and around Ōtautahi for years – including a decade with The Byllie-Jean Project and in freestyle house bands. Byllie-Jean is an Ara graduate, teaches lyric writing and also does a fine job of showcasing Māori women in music. She’s also a mother of 3 (who’ve mostly flown the coop) and that’s where the Byllie-Jean Story gets interesting. What is it to be a woman, who’s not in her 20’s anymore or the latest pop sensation … and Māori … and why does mainstream music not seem to value these voices?
